Morning Sports Update: Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly ‘day-to-day’ with sprained AC joint
Garoppolo had been on pace for 500 passing yards and six touchdowns before his departure.
The Patriots lose another quarterback and survive by the skin of their teeth against Miami, and Hanley Ramirez continued his home run barrage in another Red Sox win.
Sources: Jimmy Garoppolo has sprained right AC joint: The New England Patriots suffered a heartbreaking loss yesterday – despite their 31-24 victory over the Dolphins. While the Patriots were able to avoid a disappointing defeat by narrowly nipping a ferocious comeback led by Ryan Tannehill and his receiving corps, the team may have suffered a more costly loss in the wake of a potentially serious injury to Jimmy Garoppolo during a breakout performance. Patriots proud of the job “baby” Jacoby Brissett did: Jacoby Brissett, a rookie third-round pick, took over for Garoppolo and was able to orchestrate a touchdown drive even with his lack of experience with the Patriots offense. Brissett’s burly build – 6’4″, 235 lbs – did little to dispel his teammate’s fascination with being led by such a young quarterback, with Julian Edelman in particular poking fun (just a bit) at the 23-year-old’s expense. Four game sweep of Yankees gives Boston momentum in division race: Over at Fenway, Hanley Ramirez’s 2016 comeback campaign continued… with another comeback victory over New York. In a day without David Ortiz, Ramirez continued to appear more deserving of his whopping $88 million contract, hammering his 27th and 28th home runs of the season (he now has eight in September) as the Red Sox fought back for a 5-4 sweep-securing win. McCourty: Patriots weren’t playing “prevent” during second-half letdown vs. Dolphins: When the defense stepped back onto the field in the second half, it looked like a whole new ball game as Jarvis Landry and Devante Parker repeatedly ripped up the New England secondary. Questions arose about whether the unit had been instructed by Matt Patricia to play a deep-zone “prevent” scheme to guard against the big play, but Devin McCourty refuted them. (CSNNE)
3 big questions for Patriots: In a game that the Patriots went into trying to figure out if they could overcome the loss of two team captains in Dont’a Hightower and Rob Gronkowski with Garoppolo at the helm, they left with more questions than answers. While the biggest question to emerge is probably who the team will back up Brissett with, now that they are down to just one quarterback for Thursday’s game against Houston, it wasn’t the only one.
