Julian Edelman on playing quarterback: ‘I play receiver for a reason’

Could the Patriots call on Edelman as a backup Thursday?

When Jimmy Garoppolo went down with an injury Sunday and the Patriots were left with one quarterback on the roster, many Patriots fans had the same thought: Julian Edelman is next up.

Although Edelman spent his college career as a quarterback at Kent State, he was quick to shoot down the possibility of moving under center for the Pats.

“No. No, don’t get that construed out there,” said Edelman when asked if he was preparing to be used at the position. “Did I use that right? Those (quarterbacks), you can’t take anything from those guys. They throw the ball so well. I play receiver for a reason.”

He also made a point to defer any discussions to Bill Belichick, a smart move for any player being asked about positional or strategy moves the Patriots might be making. “You gotta ask coach. I have no clue. I’m a receiver and I’m just gonna do what my coach asks me to do.”

Although he doesn’t plan to run the offense at any point this season, Edelman did take the time to joking clarify that while he has quarterback experience, he doesn’t have much backup quarterback experience.

“You know, I started three years,” he said, to laughs from reporters. “So, I was never really a backup.”
