Morning Sports Update: Ryan Tannehill on Deflategate: ‘It’s a tough situation’
Tannehill differed from Carson Palmer and empathized with Brady when talking to New England media.
The Red Sox wasted a Rick Porcello masterpiece, the Patriots practiced (and revealed their injuries), and the C’s and B’s are rounding out their training camp rosters.
Ryan Tannehill mostly mum on Tom Brady’s Deflategate drama: After Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer made waves by taking a decidedly anti-Brady stance last week (and his team got beat after the fact), Ryan Tannehill wisely chose to keep his opinions on Deflategate to himself. The Dolphins quarterback called it a “tough situation” but emphasized that his focus was on the Patriots game this weekend. (WEEI)
Jackie Bradley Jr. explains how Kevin Gausman baffled Red Sox batters: David Price carried the Red Sox to victory in the first game of the series, but co-ace Rick Porcello came up just shy of his opposition Wednesday night. Kevin Gausman handled the powerful Red Sox offense with ease, but Jackie Bradley Jr. explained that it was not his viciously deceptive fastball coming in close to triple digits that Boston couldn’t figure out. Dont’a Hightower missed practice with knee injury, Malcolm Butler limited: The Patriots finally showed their hand at practice Wednesday, as the team was forced to reveal which players were a little banged up after the Cardinals game. Malcolm Butler joined Rob Gronkowski amongst the limited participants, while rookie receiver Malcolm Mitchell was removed from the injury report despite dislocating his elbow late in the preseason. Yoan Moncada digs in on learning curve: It’s never easy to lose one’s job, but Yoan Moncada is making the most of his demotion by all accounts, and an astute observer points out that one Derek Jeter learned quite a bit sitting on the bench when he was Moncada’s age. Brian Butterfield also spoke at length about what he has seen from Moncada, both on the field and off, and the characterization reveals why the organization values him as highly as it does. Matt Beleskey, Jimmy Hayes excited to be returning Bruins, not new guys: Last night was Bruins night at Fenway Park, and while teammate Torey Krug was throwing out the first pitch, Matt Beleskey and Jimmy Hayes spoke a little bit about the difference between their first offseason as Bruins, and this past summer after completing a full season in the black and gold. As Beleskey put it, “it’s nice to come back to a house you lived in before.” (NESN)
Do the Celtics have what it takes to keep the Cavs out of the NBA finals?: The reigning champion Cleveland Cavaliers dominated the Eastern Conference last year, but the competition has improved. With the addition of Al Horford, the Celtics stand as one of a select group of teams that can enter that conversation, but even on the shortlist the chances are slim, and are they even the team with the best chance to knock off Cleveland?
