Morning Sports Update: Tom Brady on Jimmy Garoppolo: ‘I thought he was great’
The suspended quarterback continued his weekly appearances on the Monday Night Football pregame show.
The Red Sox kept rolling behind David Price, Tom Brady praised his backup, and Cam Neely spoke about this iteration of the Bruins. Check out the rest of today’s morning sports must-reads.
Tom Brady: Jimmy Garoppolo ‘great’ in dramatic win over Cardinals: In his second interview since being suspended as part of a weekly commitment related to a sponsorship, Tom Brady had a chance to speak about how his team looked without him, including his replacement Jimmy Garoppolo, in his first NFL action. “I thought it was a great night for him and our whole offense,” Brady said. David Price’s run coming at perfect time for Red Sox: David Price won his seventh straight, for the first time in his career, as the Red Sox routed the Orioles at Fenway to the tune of a 12-2 drubbing. For a pitcher coming at a huge cost that started his tenure on the wrong foot, Price’s turnaround (2.99 ERA since May 12) and recent hot streak have been precisely what the Red Sox needed to surge to AL East supremacy. Tom Brady was happy watching football on “pretty amazing” Red Zone channel: Tom Brady got his first taste of the NFL experience watching the Patriots from the couch Sunday night, and admitted he spend most of his Sunday watching the NFL Network’s “Red Zone” channel. “I watched that one channel, that Red Zone channel that captures everything,” he said. “That’s pretty amazing.” (NESN)
Andrew Benintendi could be activated this week: Less than a month removed from suffering a gruesome-looking knee sprain in Tampa Bay, 22 year-old Andrew Benintendi is close to returning. Last week, Benintendi took batting practice and, later, baserunning drills before “passing his last test” last night by performing slides. Benintendi said he feels really good thanks to the training staff and had no trouble. (Boston Herald)
Belichick emphasized the behind-the-scenes work the Patriots did: After Sunday night’s win, Bill Belichick found Jimmy Garoppolo and congratulated him for winning in “a tough place to win.” He addressed the rest of the team and told them that the win was a product of the work they did in the meeting room and on the practice field, using situational football to prepare for and overcome the Cardinals. Cam Neely: There’s an opportunity for our group to improve: Bruins President Cam Neely still feels confident after an offseason where the team failed to improve its 19th ranked defense. Neely cited newcomer Jeff Backes as being important, and reiterated that general manager Don Sweeney has the cap space to make a move should a defenseman become available. He also said players like Tuukka Rask “can play better” than last year. (CSNNE)
