Cardinals miss their chance to take down Patriots: The Patriots held on for a 23-21 victory after Arizona kicker Chandler Catanzaro missed a 48-yard field goal that would have won the game for the Cardinals. Jimmy Garoppolo looked very good against a tough defense, completing 24-of-33 passes for 264 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Chris Hogan caught Garoppolo’s touchdown pass and LeGarrette Blount ran one in himself. (Boston Globe)
Best and worst from Patriots win vs. Cardinals: The defense came up big in the win, with Logan Ryan, Malcolm Butler, and Devin McCourty limiting the Cardinals aerial attack, and Vincent Valentine, Chris Long, and Jamie Collins notching sacks. The offense’s only major scuffles came on a Chandler Jones strip sack of Garoppolo and a LeGarrette Blount fumble, and Stephen Gostkowski’s 3-for-3 performance shouldn’t be overlooked. Patriots’ Devin McCourty explains why he raised his fist after the National Anthem: As other players around their league offered their own acts of solidarity, Devin McCourty and Martellus Bennett chose to raise a fist at the conclusion of the anthem. McCourty said he wanted to use his platform to speak out against social injustice, and that he felt uncomfortable doing anything during the anthem because he comes from a military family and has too much respect for the flag. Bill Belichick has no time for Jimmy Garoppolo storylines: After a strong debut by Garoppolo, a reporter asked Belichick if the “prevailing storyline” was that Garoppolo had exceeded expectations or if the team had watered down the game plan to aid him. In typical Belichick fashion, the head coach completely ignored the question, but instead of his usual non-answers, Belichick snapped back with sarcasm. (NESN)
