Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 168 yards, the Patriots ran for two touchdowns, and the defense forced four turnovers (converting two for scores) as New England sailed to a smooth victory in Thursday night’s preseason opener, 34-22.

The win was not perfect for the team, as the Saints outgained the Patriots in yards 369-362, controlled the game with 34 minutes of possession to the Patriots 26, and were able to sack Garoppolo twice, but ultimately the Patriots defense opportunistic play in taking the ball away four times proved to be the difference.

There was a lot to like from the team in the opener, with some unheralded players coming up big alongside the usual suspects. Tyler Gaffney broke off a big touchdown run, Trey Flowers strip-sacked Luke McCown and scored a touchdown and Malcolm Mitchell reeled in four passes for 55 yards before leaving the game with an injury that looked bad. Jamie Collins grabbed a score of his own after an interception, LeGarrette Blount powered for a touchdown and Stephen Gostkowski notched two field goals as the Patriots built some momentum heading into next week’s matchup with the Bears. Here are some photo highlights from the win.
