Rob Gronkowski throws an interception during scrimmage

Rob Gronkowski probably won't be the Patriots emergency quarterback.

Rob Gronkowski attempted a pass on Friday. It did not go well.

During a full-team scrimmage, Jimmy Garoppolo handed the ball to Gronkowski on a jet sweep. Gronk pulled up the ball for a pass, and chucked it downfield toward receiver Aaron Dobson. But safety Devin McCourty broke on the ball for an interception.

“It was one of the best punts out there, right on the 1-yard line,” Gronk said. “That’s how I’m looking at it.”

Gronk said McCourty hadn’t spoken to him about the interception yet.

“When I see him, he’s going to let me know that he picked it off,” Gronk said.

Team Brady beat Gronk and Team Garoppolo, 17-9. Members of Team Garoppolo didn’t seem thrilled about the interception.

“Now I’ve got to hear [McCourty] all damn day about his pick,” said safety Patrick Chung, shaking his head and smiling. “God, it sucked.”

McCourty, who lined up at receiver at one point during practice, knocked Gronk’s decision-making skills.

“It was a deep one,” he told reporters. “But probably not the best decision to throw into double coverage right there.”
