Jacoby Brissett discusses ‘healthy’ competition between Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo

Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo squared off in a 1-on-1 skills competition after Thursday’s practice.

The goal of the game? Get the football in the trash can.

The two Patriots quarterbacks took turns tossing balls at the large trash bin in the corner of the end zone.

“Who won?” rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett asked when he was informed of the post-practice exercise.

Neither quarterback won. Brady and Garoppolo couldn’t sink one. Both came awfully close from 30 and 40-yards out of the end zone. At least in that moment, it seemed like the quarterbacks weren’t letting Deflategate — and Brady’s four-game suspension — get to them.

“The group is awesome together,” Brissett said when asked about the competition between Brady and Garoppolo Thursday. “Just helping each other out, and learning from each other, going out there and competing against each other, even when we’re in the classroom. I feel like it’s a healthy relationship.”

Brady and Garoppolo spend a lot of time together through the day at on-field practice. They warm up next to each other every morning. They work together with the first and second teams, while Brissett tends to break away to work with the third-team. And then, there’s the hours of film study they all do together.

During Wednesday’s practice, the two starting quarterbacks stood on the sidelines, where Brady shared “just little things here and there,” Garoppolo said. When asked if Brady was giving him more advice in light of the suspension, Garoppolo said Wednesday, “Not much has changed. We just go about our business.”

With Deflategate, it’s not necessarily business as usual at Patriots training camp. But the Patriots seem to be getting as close to that as possible, even with the knowledge that their four-time Super Bowl quarterback will be sitting for the first four weeks.
