Wes Welker says he hasn’t spoken to Bill Belichick since he was with Patriots

“I don’t see really any reason to," Welker said.

There’s been roughly three years of radio silence between Wes Welker and Bill Belichick.

On 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Toucher and Rich Show” on Tuesday, the hosts asked Welker when he last spoke to the Patriots head coach, and at first, he struggled to remember.

“I spoke with him probably right before I signed with Denver [in 2013],” Welker said.

So the last time Welker spoke with his former head coach was when he was with the Patriots?

“Yeah,” Wes Welker said, adding later, “I don’t see really any reason to.”

Under Belichick, Welker’s career exploded. Belichick traded for Welker before the receiver’s third season in the league. In his first year in the Patriots’ offense, Welker put up more yards than in his last two years combined. He surpassed 1,000 yards in every season but one during his six years in New England.

But Welker blamed busy schedules for the lack of communication.

“You’re talking about about Mr. [Robert] Kraft, coach Belichick, myself,” Welker said. “I’m busy myself.”

Indeed, Belichick has been busy leading the Patriots to AFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl.

And Welker went on to play two seasons with the Denver Broncos in 2013 and 2014, and spent some of the 2015 season with the St. Louis Rams. This offseason, he helped the Ravens and Dolphins as a part-time receivers advisor, and mentioned Tuesday that’s he considering a return to the NFL as a coach.

But there are some in the Patriots organization with whom Welker keeps in touch.

Welker said: “I went to war with Tom Brady. I went to war with Matt Cassel, Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi. Those are the guys I talk to.”
