Running back LeGarrette Blount may stick around in New England.

Blount and the Patriots are in the “infant’’ stages of negotiating a new contract, according to a Boston Herald report on Wednesday. If the Patriots and Blount can’t agree to terms by March 9, he will enter free agency, and the other 31 NFL teams can also bid for his services.

During the 2015 season, the 29-year-old had 165 carries for 703 yards and six touchdowns. He also had a receiving touchdown. He finished the season with a hip injury during the Patriots-Texans game on Dec. 3, which caused him to miss the final four regular season games and the entire postseason. According to a Herald report in January 2016, the running back did not need surgery.

Blount spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Patriots before signing with the Steelers for the 2015 season. He played 11 games for Pittsburgh, but was released, and joined the Patriots for the remaining five games of the season. He was instrumental in the Patriots’ playoff run which ended with a win in Super Bowl XLIX.
