Texans linebackers coach Mike Vrabel turned down an offer to become the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator and will stay in Houston, according to the Houston Chronicle. The Texans are giving Vrabel a new contract, according to the report.

Vrabel has earned a reputation as one of the best linebacker coaches in the NFL during his two seasons under coach Bill O’Brien and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

The former Patriot linebacker coached for three seasons at Ohio State, his alma mater, where he holds the Buckeye record for sacks (36), before being reunited with Crennel, who coached him in New England. According to the Chronicle, Vrabel would be an obvious choice to replace Crennel when he retires.

Vrabel won three Super Bowls in his eight seasons with the Patriots. Along with being a Pro-Bowl linebacker, Vrabel also played some tight-end for New England under Bill Belichick. In Super Bowl XXXIX at Reliant Stadium, Vrabel caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady. In fact, every single reception that Vrabel had in the NFL, regular season and postseason, resulted in a touchdown (12).
