Bill Belichick: ‘We obviously didn’t do anything well enough’
Bill Belichick was understandably unhappy with the Patriots’ performance in a 35-28 loss to the Eagles. New England’s head coach cited mistakes or missed opportunities in all three phases of the game — offense, defense and special teams — during his postgame press conference following the defeat at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.
“Just overall we obviously didn’t do anything well enough today,’’ Belichick told reporters. “Didn’t do enough on offense, turned the ball over, gave up two third-down touchdowns on defense, didn’t play well in the kicking game, just really didn’t do anything well enough to really win. We competed and sort of had a chance there at the end to come back, but when you give up 21 points when your defense isn’t on the field, you lose about 98 percent of those games. [We’ve] just got to get back to work, got to do a better job.’’
During a run of 35 unanswered points that began in the second quarter, the Eagles scored three consecutive touchdowns from defensive and special teams returns. In the second quarter, the Eagles blocked a Ryan Allen punt, and returned it for a touchdown. In the third quarter, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw an interception that was returned for a 99-yard touchdown. Later in the third quarter, Eagles running back Darren Sproles returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown.
After falling behind 35-14, Brady and the Patriots scored 14 points in the final six minutes of the game to pull within 35-28. But they couldn’t complete the comeback.
“We had some good plays in the game,’’ Brady said. “We just didn’t have enough of them. We had too many bad ones. Just, it’s not good enough.’’
