Morning Sports Update: Roger Goodell still thinks NFL refs ‘do an extraordinary job’
Roger Goodell is pleased with the performances of his referees, Tom Brady calls for rule changes about defenseless receivers, and Rajon Rondo and the Kings match up against the Celtics in Mexico City on Thursday night.
Roger Goodell says NFL refs ‘do an extraordinary job’: “I think our officials do an extraordinary job,’’ Goodell said. “I think what we see now through technology is we see things we could never see before. But I think what it does is it validates the quality of our officiating. We all recognize that officials are going to make mistakes. What we need to do is try to avoid those mistakes as much as possible, train them differently and improve the quality of the officiating and use technology to help them when a mistake does occur.’’ (Boston.com)
Tom Brady says defenseless receiver penalties should apply to receivers’ legs: “I don’t see why a defenseless receiver shouldn’t get his legs protected as well. Maybe that’s something they’ll look at in the offseason.’’ (The Boston Globe)
Danny Amendola told trainers he was fine despite not feeling 100 percent: “I didn’t think it was bad at first, and then I couldn’t run, like turn over my legs at a high rate,’’ Amendola said. “I didn’t want to hobble around out there and get killed.’’ (ProFootballTalk.com)
Talking trash with Garbage Time’s Katie Nolan, the woman holding the NFL accountable: “Nolan is irreverent, morally driven, self-deprecating, and incredibly quick-witted, both on camera and off. Talking to her is like playing verbal ping pong, a game the bartender seems to be losing as she teases him for forgetting the pretzel she ordered.’’ (Boston.com)
Claude Julien says Bruins ‘very average’ in loss to Oilers: “Very average…I think we were very average tonight,’’ said Claude Julien. “I think our skating game was there, but we didn’t play a real hard game tonight. That’s what we needed to go. We needed to skate and we needed to play hard against this team, and we chose instead to play a little more of their type of game.’’ (CSNNE.com)
Brad Stevens: ‘I’m happy for Rajon [Rondo]’: “He’s been really good,’’ Stevens said. “Multiple, triple-double games. He’s always had one of the best abilities to pass the ball that I’ve ever seen. And he’s shooting good percentages and he’s playing well. I’m happy for Rajon.’’ (CSNNE.com)
