SportsCenter clarifies that emoji tweet was not about Spygate
Following the New England Patriots’ 20-13 win over the Buffalo Bills Monday night, the official ESPN SportsCenter Twitter account sent out a tweet containing only alternating football and camcorder emojis.
The tweet could have been referencing the amount of instant replays interspersed between football action during the game, but several news outlets speculated as to whether the tweet was something more nefarious after Patriots fans reacted on social media. In 2007, the Patriots were fined and docked a draft pick for unauthorized videotaping of opponents’ signals in a scandal known as Spygate.
SportsCenter clarified the intent of the tweet Tuesday.
