Patriots lineman Nate Solder announces infant son has cancer
New England Patriots left tackle Nate Solder announced Monday evening that his infant son, Hudson, has cancer.
The Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe reported that Hudson, who was born in July, was diagnosed with a Wilms’ tumor in his kidneys and has already undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy at Boston Children’s Hospital.
The 27-year-old Patriots tackle, currently on injured reserve with torn biceps, was himself diagnosed with testicular cancer in April 2014. However, Solder played the entire 2014 season after doctors removed the affected testicle and didn’t make his diagnosis known until a year later. He has since publicly worked to raise awareness about the disease.
Solder made the announcement regarding his son while speaking at the Above & Beyond the Gratitude Gala, which benefits the Joe Andruzzi Foundation.
Andruzzi was also an offensive lineman for the Patriots from 2000 to 2004 and overcame non-Hodgkin Burkitt lymphoma in 2007. His foundation’s mission is to provide “help, hope, and a reason to smile for cancer patients and their families by contributing financial and emotional support when it is needed most.’’
