Chandler Jones mic’d up vs. Redskins: ‘First we’re gonna stop the run, then we’re gonna have some fun’
The Redskins were going to reestablish their run-first identity against the New England Patriots Sunday. But the Patriots held Redskins rushers to 37 yards and won, 27-10.
“First we’re gonna stop the run, then we’re gonna have some fun,’’ defensive end Jones said to a group of defensive players before the game, via Patriots.com’s “Sound FX.’’
Jones made significant contributions in run defense, stuffing Matt Jones on three occasions for 1-yard gains. The 25-year-old veteran, who also had a 4-yard sack on Kirk cousins, has been touted for his NFL-leading 9.5 sacks this season, but his efforts elsewhere earned praise from head coach Bill Belichick.
“One of the best things Chandler has done this year is play the run,’’ Belichick said after the game, “and a lot of times he’s playing it from the edge but there are certainly other times when he’s played it from a three technique and much closer to the ball and he’s done a good job of that, too.’’
Jones also got recognition from the Patriots’ head coach during the game. Jones was blocking during a point-after attempt, and allowed a Redskins’ edge-player to turn the corner and potentially block Stephen Gostkowski’s kick. The attempt was good, but Belichick went up to Jones and advised him to “drill that edge guy.’’
Jones did just that on the next PAT, which earned him a “nice job’’ and low-five from Belichick.
Bill Belichick’s not mad; this is just his RBF
