New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis will miss the remainder of the 2015 season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee, as first reported by The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride.

The Patriots announced later on Monday that Lewis had been placed on injured reserve.

Lewis sustained the injury on a 14-yard reception in the third quarter of the Patriots’ 27-10 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Lewis fell awkwardly at the end of the play, and went to the ground clutching his left leg. He left the game and did not return.

“It’s such a physical game and tough to lose such a special player,’’ Tom Brady said in a postgame press conference.

Also citing unnamed sources, ESPN and NFL.com subsequently reported on Monday that Lewis had been diagnosed with a torn ACL.

After not appearing in a NFL game in 2013 or 2014, Lewis signed with the Patriots for the 2015 season and won the third-down running back role. In seven games, he had 49 rushes for 234 yards and two touchdowns, and 36 receptions for 388 yards and two touchdowns.

Lewis signed a two-year extension with the Patriots in October.

Filling in for Lewis in the second half on Sunday, running back Brandon Bolden had one rush for 12 yards and three catches for 27 yards and a touchdown.

“Brandon has grown a lot,’’ Bill Belichick said Monday. “He came in as we know undrafted and kind of earned his spot on the team, but he’s shown to be a dependable player on all four downs, plays a lot for us on fourth down, but made plays in the passing game, made plays in the running game [Sunday].’’

James White is the other running back on the Patriots depth chart. Free agent Travaris Cadet also spent time with the Patriots during the beginning of the season, but struggled to find a role due to injuries.
