Bill Belichick can’t praise the Washington Redskins enough

It took Patriots head coach Bill Belichick 300 words to heap enough praise on Kirk Cousins in response to a question about the Redskins quarterback Monday morning.

“I think he does a lot of things well,’’ said a gushing Belichick. “Seems like a really smart guy. … He’s pretty athletic even though he hasn’t run a lot… he definitely has quickness to create a little extra time to throw… They play a lot of people in the passing game and he can get the ball to them. Definitely spreads it around. … they’re one of the better third-down teams in the league and one of the better red-area teams in the league, so I think that counts a lot for a quarterback to make plays in those situations. … I think he’s done a good job for them.’’

There’s more, but you get the gist. Belichick was back at it again Wednesday, effusively praising Cousins, DeSean Jackson, and the rest of the Redskins, despite the team’s 3-4 record. In one answer alone, he used the word “explosive’’ four times.

“There are a lot of impressive things that they do,’’ said Belichick. “They’re tough, they’re very competitive, they do a lot of things well and they give you a lot to get ready for. They’re not an easy team to prepare for. They have a real good complementary system on offense, defense and special teams, so kind of if you’re stopping one thing, they’re doing something else or they have something else that you have to be worried about, and they do a good job executing it. They’re a real good game plan team. They have good schemes and obviously a lot of good players. Offensively, they have excellent backs, good offensive line and again they’re very well coached. …Really good group of receivers, an explosive group, obviously with [DeSean] Jackson, that becomes even more explosive. … Defensively, strong up front, good edge players – [Trent] Murphy, [Preston] Smith, obviously [Ryan] Kerrigan, good inside players, disruptive group there with [Terrance] Knighton, [Chris] Baker, [Jason] Hatcher, linebackers run well, and they’re good in the kicking game. They’ve had explosive plays, they’re a good punt rush team… we have to be ready for whoever their returners are going to be — [Rashad] Ross, [Jamison] Crowder, Jackson – whoever it is. They’re all explosive guys. They can attack anywhere on the field and do a good job.’’

Compare that praise to some of the actual headlines about the Redskins, and the difference is a bit jarring.
