Deflategate judge says he had no idea what he was getting into
But now that he’s familiar, the judge would like his free cup of coffee.
Judge Richard M. Berman, arbiter of justice, hero from Bristol to Bar Harbor, hasn’t always been intimately connected with deflated footballs.
In fact, before he oversaw the case last month, the judge was unfamiliar with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s plight. It wasn’t until a clerk told him the case was his that he’d even heard of Deflategate.
“I had no idea what he was talking about,’’ Berman told The Cornell Daily Sun, Cornell’s student newspaper. “I was really busy.’’
The Cornell paper runs a nice profile of Berman, beginning with his days at a pie-eyed, 16-year-old freshman in the ‘60s and coming back to this case that’s made him famous. Berman says he’s been surprised at the reaction to the case from New England, but that he’s been paying attention.
“Oh my god,’’ Berman said. “It’s hard to miss that.’’
As for the Lewiston, Maine Dunkin’ Donuts that offered him free coffee for life?
“If I’m up in Maine, we usually don’t take gifts, but a cup of coffee, I would certainly stop by there.’’
