New England can exhale.

The Patriots held off a late rally by the Bills in a 40-32 win on Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. The Patriots improved to 2-0 on the 2015 season with the victory.

The Bills outscored the Patriots 19-3 in the fourth quarter, but could not erase the 37-13 deficit they faced after three quarters. A late interception by Patriots cornerback Logan Ryan with 1:15 remaining sealed the win.

“Our team showed a lot of mental toughness,’’ Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said after the win.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw for 466 yards — the second-highest single-game total of his career and the most by any quarterback against the Bills in a single game — and three touchdowns. Two of the touchdown passes thrown by Brady were caught by wide receiver Julian Edelman, who finished with 97 receiving yards and 11 receptions. Tight end Rob Gronkowski caught Brady’s third touchdown pass and racked up 113 yards on seven catches.

“We threw the ball a lot. I don’t know if I’ve ever thrown it as much, once,’’ Brady told reporters after the game. “It was a lot of throws. There will be a lot of ways to win them. And I think that the important thing is to find a way to get the victory.’’
