Starting center Bryan Stork has been placed on injured reserve with a designation to return, the Patriots announced Wednesday. He cannot be activated until Week 8.

The second-year lineman had been in the league’s concussion protocol according to media reports Monday and did not practice this week.

Stork suffered a concussion in 2013 while at Florida State and suffered another last season, missing two games. Such injuries can be cumulative, with repeated concussions possibly leading to longer recovery times and more severe post-concussive effects, such as headaches, dizziness and sensitivity to light. Former San Francisco 49er Chris Borland and others have retired over fears of the dangers of concussions in recent years.

Starting right guard Ryan Wendell is a candidate to slide over with Stork sidelined, as he played center before Stork won the job last year. With third-year Josh Kline set to start at one of the guard spots, it’s likely rookies Shaq Mason and Tre’ Jackson see significant time while Stork is sidelined.

Stork started 13 games at center for the Patriots last year.
