Near the end of December, Sundays may get significantly more controversial.

Will Smith stars in “Concussion,’’ which hits theaters on December 25. The movie is based upon the story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic neuropathologist who discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) while studying the brains of former NFL players Dave Duerson and Andre Waters.

The first trailer, released exclusively to MMQB.com, juxtaposes the passionate doctor against the intimidating NFL.

The movie’s writer and director Peter Landesman played two years of football at Brown University. He told MMQB he found the story intriguing, in part, because the doctor is an immigrant in a “David vs. Goliath’’ battle against the NFL.

“[Omalu’s] purity and his innocence was a requirement for him to drill down into this and tell us a very uncomfortable and inconvenient truth,’’ Landesman said.

An Inconvenient Truth’’ is also the name of a documentary about climate change featuring Al Gore. As TheVerge.com points out, this film could have a similarly eye-opening impact on a smaller scale among football fans.

“As an immigrant coming to America, who discovers a dangerous detail about the most American of things, America’s sacred cow, who then is forced to tell America about itself as a disaffected Nigerian, it was an extraordinary opportunity to explore what it is to be an American,’’ Landesman said.
