Morning Sports Update: Eduardo Rodriguez pitches a gem on night Ben Cherington resigns
The Red Sox made big moves in the front office, adding a new president in Dave Dombrowksi while seeing their general manager Ben Cherington resign. ESPN reporter Adam Schefter thought it pertinent to photograph and tweet the boxes of Wilson footballs, which have information about the retention of air. And while Boston media was preoccupied by the Red Sox front office, rookie starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez pitched a gem.
Red Sox hire Dombrowski as president; Cherington out as GM: “The Boston Red Sox have hired former Detroit Tigers president and General Manager Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball operations, effective immediately, the team announced Tuesday night on Twitter. In addition, the team said GM Ben Cherington ‘declined the opportunity to continue as [general manager] but has agreed to assist Dombrowski during the transition’’’ (Boston.com)
Settlement talks are getting nowhere, and Tom Brady decides to return for Wednesday practice: “ … the talks went so poorly, according to reports, that Brady now plans to rejoin teammates at practice Wednesday in West Virginia instead of appearing in New York federal court for a settlement hearing in front of US District Judge Richard Berman.’’ (The Boston Globe)
5 things to know about Dave Dombrowski: “Dombrowski was general manager of the Marlins when John Henry bought the team in 1999. Dombrowski departed in 2001 for the Tigers, and Henry led the group that bought the Red Sox in 2002. “I have known Dave very well for a long time. [Chairman] Tom [Werner] and I have no doubts that Dave is the right person to strengthen our baseball operations group going forward,’’ Henry said in a statement Tuesday night.’’ (The Boston Globe)

On HBO’s Hard Knox last night, former Patriots coach Bill O’Brien tutored his players on how to say nothing — kind of like how the Patriots speak to the media:

Bills running back LeSean McCoy sustained a hamstring injury on Tuesday: “Bills running back LeSean McCoy limped off the practice field on Tuesday. Dustin Pedroia is sad to see Cherington resign as Red Sox general manager: “I’ve known Ben my whole time with the Red Sox,’’ Pedroia said after Tuesday’s game. “He’s been a big part of a lot of things in my career. We’ve had a lot of memories. Obviously, this is new. We’re going to miss him. I’m going to miss him. He has a lot of special relationships with guys. It’s tough.’’ (WEEI.com)
