Darrelle Revis addresses being labeled a ‘mercenary’

New York Jets Darrelle Revis speaks to the media after a Jets practice in Florham Park, N.J. Seth Wenig/AP

Former New England Patriots and current New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis makes light of the notion that he’s a mercenary, looking for a bigger paycheck. Mookie Betts makes a phenomenal grab on Monday night. Bill Belichick praises second-year cornerback Malcolm Butler for playing like a rookie. And Gronk shows off his Super Bowl ring in a “This is SportsCenter’’ ad.

Darrelle Revis continues to raise the bar in contract negotiation: “By 2017, [Revis] will have earned at least $134 million over the course of his career, cementing his legacy as one of the most successful — and, some would argue, most cynical — negotiators in NFL history. As he spears a piece of shrimp, I awkwardly broach the subject of his cutthroat reputation. ‘When you Google “Darrelle Revis,’’ it says …’ He pauses, sets down his chopsticks. ‘Greedy.’ ‘Mercenary.’ He rolls up one of his sleeves, laying his forearm across the table like he’s waiting to have blood drawn. He jabs at his skin. ‘Should I get that tatted on me — all of those names?’ When I look up, he bursts into laughter.’’ (ESPN/ESPN The Magazine)

Boston Bruins battle with the IRS over player meals: “The Boston Bruins may change the way your company treats its employees, and not because your boss is planning to give away his tickets. Jimmy Garoppolo’s comfort in the Patriots offense is like “night and day: “Compared to last year? I mean, it’s night and day,’’ Garoppolo said. “Last year, like I said earlier, I was just trying to pick up the playbook, meetings, head was spinning a little bit, so this year it’s a little different, got different goals and everything and focusing on that. Former Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo has put his Boston house on the market for $2.45 million: “The lower level of Rajon Rondo’s home would be enough to pique the interest of any home buyer. No wonder the property stole the attention of the former Celtics star. Home theater? Check. Lounge with galley kitchen and fireplace? Game room? Bedroom with full bath? Check. Check. Check. How about a grooming space complete with barber’s chair and mirror? Yup. And that’s just in the walkout basement of Rondo’s Lincoln home, which quietly went on the market in May for $2.45 million.’’ (The Boston Globe)

Bill Belichick thinks Malcolm Butler still acts like a rookie — which is a good thing: “I think he, as much as any player that I’ve been around, has really not changed very much from Year One to Year Two,’’ Belichick said. “I think he’s maintained his level of humility, his lifestyle, his sense of purpose. In a lot of ways, he acts like a rookie out there, like he’s starting all over again. Which, in a lot of ways, that’s the way it is for all of us. We’re all starting all over again.’’ (CSNNE.com)

Gronk shows off his Super Bowl ring in ESPN’s ‘This is SportsCenter’ ad: “Things got a little catty on “This is SportsCenter.’’ In a video featuring Rob Gronkowski posted Monday, the New England Patriots’ tight end showed off his Super Bowl ring—as if he’d just gotten engaged. To his face, the anchors compliment Gronk on his bling, but as soon as Gronk leaves, the guys rip the gaudy, 205-diamond ring.’’ (Boston.com)
