New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith got into an altercation Tuesday with linebacker Ikemefuna Enemkpali, who hit Smith in the face and broke his jaw in two places, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“He got cold cocked, sucker punched — whatever you want to call it — in the jaw,’’ Jets head coach Todd Bowles said, via The New York Times. He said the fight wasn’t football-related, adding that it was over “something very childish, that sixth-graders could have talked about.’’

Smith will need to undergo surgery for the injury. Eleven-year veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick or rookie Bryce Petty will likely replace Smith in his absence.
