Patriots sign quarterback Matt Flynn
The New England Patriots have signed veteran quarterback Matt Flynn. The team announced the deal Friday, but did not disclose terms of the contract.
Flynn becomes the third quarterback on the Patriots’ roster, along with Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo. He could compete with Garappolo for a temporary starting role if Brady’s four-game suspension related to Deflategate remains in place following an appeal.
The 29-year-old has started seven career games over seven NFL seasons. Overall, he has appeared in 53 games, throwing for 2,541 yards and 17 touchdowns. He spent the first four years of his NFL career backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.
Flynn memorably set single-game Packers records in Week 17 of 2012 starting in place of Rodgers, throwing for 480 yards and six touchdowns. That performance helped him earn him a three-year, $20.5 million deal with the Seahawks with $9 million guaranteed, but he lost a quarterback battle to Russell Wilson in preseason. He was traded to Oakland the following year.
Flynn had one of the best games of his career starting in place of an injured Rodgers against in Foxborough in 2010. He went 24-for-37 with 251 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
