Flashback Friday: Miley-Farrell spat invokes memories of Tom Brady and Bill O’Brien

Tom Brady heads to the sideline after throwing an interception in 2011. His offensive coordinator, Bill O’Brien, wasn’t happy with him. The Boston Globe

Sometimes an athlete and a coach bring out the best in each other. Sometimes they do the exact opposite. Whether a struggling starting pitcher or a Hall of Fame quarterback is involved, the heat of the moment can get the best of anyone.

Unhappy about being pulled from a game Thursday after four innings, Red Sox pitcher Wade Miley threw a tantrum in the dugout directed towards manager John Farrell. The lefty had surrendered five runs on nine hits.

Miley is far from the first athlete to lose his cool when dealing with a critical coach. In 2011, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and his offensive coordinator got into an on-camera spat following an interception. Brady later admitted that he was at fault for the interception and conceded that Bill O’Brien, now the head coach of the Houston Texans, was just doing his job telling him he messed up.

Miley, 5-6 in his first season with the Red Sox, was similarly apologetic after Thursday’s argument. Of course, he hadn’t exactly built up the goodwill in Boston that Brady had before letting his emotions get the best of him so publicly. While O’Brien received a lot of credit for standing up to Brady, Farrell’s handling of the incident only fueled debate about his job status.
