Stevan Ridley: Patriots ‘made a mistake’ in Deflategate scandal

Stevan Ridley, the former Patriots running back who signed with the New York Jets this offseason, weighed in on Deflategate Thursday, calling it a mistake on the part of his former team.

“They made a mistake,’’ said Ridley, according to nj.com. “The best thing that can happen is that they deal with that on their own. That has nothing to do with the New York Jets, and this is where I am now.’’

Ridley suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 6 last season, so he didn’t play in the Patriots AFC Championship Game victory over the Colts. Observing from afar, Ridley never actually carried any of the footballs that the NFL determined were underinflated.

“The football is deflated or not, it took a lot of hard work to get there,’’ Ridley said. “I’m not saying they’re right; I’m not saying they’re wrong. But what I am saying is you can’t take away that they got that title.’’

Ridley insisted that his comments are not meant to be taken as sour grapes, but it’s no secret he spent some time in Bill Belichick’s doghouse with his fumbling issues. Ridley could get his chance to stick it to his former team when the Jets visit Gillette Stadium in Week 7.
