Your monthly reminder of Boston’s sports dominance, via the New York Times
Bostonians need only look outside everyotheryear or so to see just how good they have it, but the New York Times has nonetheless provided another illustration of the city’s sports dominance.
A pair of graphics published last week on the paper of record’s Upshot blog visually quantify the city’s sports success in terms of the percentage of titles and top-four finishes Boston teams have accumulated in the last 50 years.
The scatter plot format employed by the Times also serves to illustrate how often Boston wins when they reach the final four, with the higher end of the Y-axis representing a higher win rate and the lower end of the Y-axis representing a lower win rate. Put another way, Boston finishes well, while Philly and Salt Lake City struggle in crunch time. (In other news, poor Cleveland.)
When normalized for number of teams, San Antonio’s 10.6 percent NBA title win rate beats Boston’s over all four major sports, but it’s hard to argue they’ve seen greater sports success
The Washington Post in April told roughly the same story over the last decade of data with a fun (for Boston fans) interactive infographic that’s well worth a click.
This is how awesome it is to be a Boston sports fan
