Roderick MacKinnon, the Nobel Laureate who offered his scientific expertise for the Patriots’ wellsreportincontext.com site launched on Thursday, co-founded a biotech company in 2014 called Flex Pharma Inc. in which the Kraft Group invested.

Several pro sports ownership groups helped to fund Flex Pharma last fall, among them the Kraft Group and Wyc Grousbeck and Steve Pagliuca of the Celtics, according to a report in The Boston Globe.

The introduction to MacKinnon’s analysis on the site states that “professor MacKinnon has no business or personal relationship with the Patriots. When news of the investigation became public, he offered his scientific expertise to the team.’’

The Patriots later added a clarification to this portion of MacKinnon’s conclusion stating, “Professor MacKinnon was a founder of Flex Pharma, a biotechnology company developing treatments for neuromuscular disorders. Flex Pharma is a public company. Prior to the company going public, the investment arm of The Kraft Group made a passive investment in Flex Pharma as part of a large syndicated investor group.’’ This statement is followed by the words ADDED FOR CLARITY in brackets and time-stamped, 5/14/15 3:13pm.
