The New England Patriots have multiple needs on defense, but they’re focusing heavily on addressing one need in particular.

With their first fourth-round pick (101 overall), the Patriots selected Arkansas defensive end Trey Flowers.

At 6’2’’ and 266 pounds, Flowers projects to a defensive end/outside linebacker hybrid role in the Patriots’ multiple defense. Flowers has been a playmaker off the edge for the Razorbacks, notching 47.5 tackles for loss and 18 sacks in his college career, with 42 tackles for loss and 17 sacks in his final three years.

He has impressive burst off the line of scrimmage, as evidenced by his 36.5-inch vertical jump and 121-inch broad jump. He’s not considered a quick-twitch athlete, but he has the length (34.5-inch arms)

The Patriots have bolstered their rotation of edge defenders this offseason with the additions of Flowers as well as free-agent acquisition Jabaal Sheard and third-round pick Geneo Grissom.
