What Was the Deal With Tom Brady’s ‘5’ Shirt?

Four Patriots, four trophies. The Boston Globe

The biggest story surrounding Tom Brady’s throwing out the first pitch yesterday at Fenway Park — even more so than his terrible throw and questionable decision to drape a sweatshirt around his waist — was his shirt, emblazoned with a large number 5.

The shirt has proven so popular, copies are already being sold on eBay.

The prevailing theory suggests it was an allusion to the quest for Lombardi No. 5, and it’s an obvious connection to make, given Brady and Co. trotting out the team’s four existing trophies for their appearance.

Maybe the shirt was made in partnership with Under Armour, of which Tom Brady is the biggest face? The company has yet to respond to a request for comment. Or maybe it was created under the umbrella of TB12, Brady’s brand and sports therapy center? The center has yet to comment, and TB12 logo designer BrandFire Creative said it‘s not behind the shirt.

According to its owner, though, the shirt was simply a lucky find.

“I was looking through my closet,’’ Brady said while warming up in the bowels of Fenway. “I was like, ‘I don’t know what I have, I gotta wear a t-shirt.’’

Regardless of the intent, one thing is clear — the hunt for the fifth Lombardi Trophy is on.
