The Patriots will have the opportunity to match New York’s offer, according to Yahoo Sports’ Rand Getlin. The terms of the offer have not been reported.

Vereen’s departure will leave the Patriots with a running back rotation of LeGarrette Blount, Jonas Gray, James White, Brandon Bolden and Tyler Gaffney, assuming the injured Stevan Ridley also departs in free agency. The team has been linked to Redskins free agent Roy Helu, who could be a capable replacement for Vereen.

Vereen has operated primarily as a pass-catcher out of the backfield for New England, catching 52 balls for 447 last year to go along with 96 rushes for 391 yards. He caught 11 passes in Super Bowl XLIX, five of them for first downs.

In New York, Vereen will join a backfield that includes veteran Rashad Jennings, and second-year passing game no-show/former Boston College standout Andre Williams.
