The Patriots elected to use the franchise tag on Gostkowski Monday, and it appears that Devin McCourty will get to test the open market when free agency begins March 10, unless he and the team agree to a new deal before then.

New England is working on clearing cap space, with Darrelle Revis expected to be the top priority in free agency. Vince Wilfork announced Thursday that the team won’t pick up his option, making him a free agent and clearing over $8 million in cap room for the Patriots.
