Vince Wilfork Announces Patriots To Let Him Become Free Agent In Heartfelt Letter

Vince Wilfork, nose tackle for the Patriots for the last 11 seasons, took to Twitter Thursday with a letter stating that team will not pick up the option on his contract for next season.

The letter reads like an amicable goodbye, with Wilfork saying, in part, “I have a great relationship with the Patriots organization. Please know how blessed my family and I have been to be able to play 11 years in New England. …. This will always be my home.’’

The 33-year-old Wilfork, who was owed a $4 million roster bonus Tuesday, becomes a free agent. Wilfork signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract last year.

Wilfork played in all 19 games in 2014, bouncing back from an Achilles’ tendon injury. His performance earned him $5.4 million in incentives, according to the Boston Globe.

Teams can begin meeting with free agent as this weekend, and are allowed to finalize new deals starting Tuesday.
