Michael Sam, the first openly gay player selected in the NFL draft, will participate in the 20th season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars’’. A first-team All-American defensive lineman out of Missouri who was named co-SEC Defensive Player Of The Year in 2013, Sam was selected by the St. Louis Rams late in the seventh round of the 2014 draft. He was later cut by the Rams and then spent part of the 2014 season on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad.

Outsports.com reported earlier this month that the Cardinals would be “looking at’’ the free agent during the offseason. In an interview with The MMQB, Sam acknowledged he might have to play a season or two in the Canadian Football League to attempt to raise his stock among NFL teams.

Sam is the latest athlete to join the ‘DWTS’, following in the choreagraphed footsteps of several NFL stars. His dance partner will be Peta Murgatroyd, who won Season 14’s competition when she was paired with former Packers wide receiver Donald Driver.
