The Larry Fitzgerald fantasy won’t be coming to fruition for any Patriots fans who dreamed of the Cardinals receiver catching passes from Tom Brady. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting Fitzgerald and the Cardinals are working on a new contract that will alleviate his bloated cap hit and keep him in Arizona for the foreseeable future.

The Fitzgerald to New England idea was never more than a pipe dream economically, but the prospect of pairing Fitzgerald with Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman was a fun idea in theory. With Fitzgerald’s contract issues – he was slated to carry a $23.6 million cap number and $14.4 million in “dead money’’ this season – and the quarterback problems that have plagued Arizona in recent years, Fitzgerald seemed like a perfect candidate to come to New England at a discount in order to play with Brady and chase a Super Bowl ring.

It now appears the only way to assemble that offense will be through fantasy football online. Pro Football Talk reports the Cardinals will save $13 million in cap money with the new deal.

New England has in-house affairs to take care of before moving on to targets from other teams. Darrelle Revis needs a new, long term deal and Devin McCourty’s situation needs to be worked out by the March 2 deadline to slap the franchise tag on him
