Bill Belichick Finds Secret Weapon In Deflategate Investigation: David Letterman

Not only does David Letterman claim to know who knows what really happened with Deflategate, but he’s ready to testify.

The “Late Show’’ host tackled the scandal that made headlines before and after the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl XLIX win while interviewing head coach Bill Belichick on Wednesday. Letterman seemed awfully certain he knew what actually happened with those 11 footballs reportedly judged to not be inflated to NFL standards during the first half of the Patriots’ win over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game.

“I know you know exactly what happened, you know I know you know, and what it was, was some kind of horseplay, am I right?’’ Letterman asked Belichick.

The query was greeted with a resounding “No’’ from Belichick.

Seemingly uninterested in getting too deep into what did or didn’t happen, Belichick listened while Letterman expounded on his own ball testing and riffed on bathroom visit duration. After Letterman wondered aloud if the Colts, his favorite NFL team, could have been behind it all, the legendarily taciturn coach found a job for Letterman to do that would potentially help the Patriots.

“We’re going to bring you in to testify when we get the investigation next month,’’ Belichick quipped.

Over the remainder of the interview, Letterman and Belichick chatted about the Patriots’ win in Super Bowl XLIX, his relationship with quarterback Tom Brady and the controversial call by Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll on the decisive play.

“I don’t think you can criticize what they did,’’ Belichick told Letterman when asked about Carroll’s controversial decision to throw rather than run in the final second. “The execution, it was a great play by Malcolm Butler, that’s what it was.’’
