Malcolm Butler is the Improbable Hero in Patriots’ Super Bowl XLIX Win
Rookie backups from Western Alabama aren’t supposed to be the heroes of classic Super Bowl matchups. Apparently, no one told Malcolm Butler.
The first-year cornerback sealed the Patriots’ Super Bowl XLIX win over the Seahawks with an unforgettable interception. Called into action with Kyle Arrington struggling to handle Seattle wide receiver Chris Matthews, Butler jumped the slant pattern Ricardo Lockette was running with the game on the line.

The Seahawks had driven to the Patriots’ 1-yard line in search of the go-ahead score in the final minute.

No matter what the rest of his career holds, Butler will always have Super Bowl XLIX to hang his hat on. He’s was an unknown rookie before the game, but now he’ll always be a champion and a hero in New England. He might also be the only person not surprised by his heroics.
“I just had a vision that I was going to make a big play and it came true and I’m just blessed,’’ Butler said after the game, in an interview with NBC’s Michelle Tafoya.
