Logan Mankins Doesn’t Know if He Should Have Taken Pay Cut to Stay With Pats
Logan Mankins went from first to worst when he was traded from the Patriots to the now 2-14 Tampa Bay Buccaneers prior to the 2014 season.
Everyone remembers the shock of the news. Bill Belichick traded Mankins for Tim Wright and a 4th round pick just before the start of the regular season, a puzzling move for a Patriots team built to win now.
Details quickly emerged that Mankins and the team could not agree to a pay cut, leading to his departure from town. After experiencing some early growing pains, the Patriots have the offensive line playing at a competent level and are two wins away from the Super Bowl.
If he could go back, would Mankins be willing to sacrifice more of his pride and money for a chance to win a championship?
“I don’t know,’’ Mankins told Jackie MacMullan of ESPN Boston. “At this point, sure, I’d like to be winning more games. But everything outside of football is going great. The most important thing to me is my family, and they’re doing fine.’’
Mankins told MacMullan he “doesn’t feel sorry for himself’’ and that he still talks with his close friends from New England.
But as he sits at home watching, will he root for the Patriots? Or will it be sour grapes?
“I will be rooting for them,’’ he told MacMullan. “I have too many close relationships to root against those guys.’’
