Browns Suspend Josh Gordon for Season Finale
Wide receiver Josh Gordon has played five games for the Cleveland Browns since returning from his 10-game suspension, but he won’t get a chance to suit up for a sixth.
The team announced on Saturday that Gordon has been suspended for the Browns’ season finale against the Baltimore Ravens for an unspecified violation of team rules. Wide receiver Phil Bates has been added from the practice squad to fill Gordon’s place on the active roster.
Gordon was originally suspended for the entirety of this season for repeated violations of the league’s substance abuse policy after he had failed a test for marijuana, a ban that was reduced to 10 games on Sept 19. Gordon also served a two-game suspension in 2013 for a failed drug test.
The 23-year-old will end the season with 24 catches for 303 receiving yards and no touchdowns. Gordon is just one year removed from his massive 2013 campaign, when he caught 87 passes for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Browns looked like they may finally end their 12-year playoff drought this season, sitting at 7-4 through 11 games, but have lost four straight. A win on Sunday would secure the Browns just their second non-losing season since 2002.
