Rams, St. Louis County Police At Odds Over What, Exactly, an ‘Apology’ Is

Jeff Curry/USA Today

The St. Louis County police are trying to start a Twitter fight over the definition of the word “apology.’’ Yes, you read that correctly.

After claiming on Monday night that Rams’ vice president and COO Kevin Demoff apologized to them for five Rams’ players making the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’’ gesture while being introduced before Sunday’s home game, Demoff told ESPN Rams’ reporter Nick Wagoner that he did not apologize, he simply “expressed remorse for how those actions were construed.’’

This was the St. Louis County PD’s response:

They also put out a statement responding to Demoff on their Facebook page, basically instigating an argument over the semantics of what he said, or at least how they interpreted it. Earlier Monday, the NFL announced that it would not discipline the players who made the gesture, despite the insistence of the St. Louis Police Officers Association that it should do just that. Rams’ coach Jeff Fisher also said during his press conference on Monday that he had no problem with the players making the gesture and that they “made the choice to exercise their free speech.’’

The St. Louis County PD and St. Louis Police Officers Association would appear to disagree. And this story seems to be far from over.
