NFL merchandise sales are up three percent, but no thanks to the Washington Redskins.

There was a 35 percent dip in the sale of Redskins-related merchandise in the last quarter, according to SportsSourceOne, as outrage over the use of the term “Redskins’’ gained steam .

People are having a second thoughts about wearing a T-shirt with the logo or name that it has now been called racist,’’ Matt Powell, senior analyst for SportsSourceOne, told CNN.

The Redskins couldn’t dismiss the claim that their team’s name is in any way racist quickly enough, telling CNN that the real reason why no one wants to buy their jerseys anymore is because the team stinks.

“Unfortunately, team performance on the field is a major factor in the apparel business, and a 3-13 season doesn’t do much to help sales,’’ said Tony Wyllie. “However, we are working hard to improve that record and we look forward to the season opener this weekend.’’

The editorial board of the Washington Post, as well as the New York Daily News, recently said they would no longer print the term “Redskins’’. One of the team’s preseason opponents recently live-tweeted an entire game without using the word.
