Belichick on Patriots-Saints: A good week

FOXBOROUGH — Patriots head coach Bill Belichick just went to the podium to discuss his team’s first preseason game, a 7-6 win over the New Orleans Saints at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots practiced with the Saints for two days as the teams became familiar with one another.

“It was a good week,” said Belichick. “There’s a lot of things we can learn from all three of those days. There’s a lot of things we can learn from tonight.

“We competed. We competed for 60 minutes. I thought we worked hard.”

Belichick complimented his players, referring indirectly to first-round picks Dont’a Hightower and Chandler Jones, who both started the game. Hightower had one tackle and assisted on three others, while Jones had one and assisted on one.

“I think all the players that I saw, especially the rookies, some of them did some good things,” said Belichick. “But there’s a long way to go.”

Belichick dodged a question about the impact the replacement officials had on the game.

“I’m just trying to coach our team here,” he said. “I’m not worried about the officials.”

On his first-team offense’s inability to score, Belichick said, “I wouldn’t say we lit it up offensively at any point, in any aspect of the game.”
