Source: Andre Carter needs surgery

Patriots defensive end Andre Carter was taken from the field on a motorized cart after suffering an apparent left leg injury in the first quarter of today’s game vs. the Broncos in Denver.

A source told the Globe’s Shalise Manza Young he will require surgery for the injury. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported via Twitter that the injury was “quad-related,” according to agent Carl Poston.

Carter clutched his left leg after being hit on the final play of the quarter, a 2-yard run by Lance Ball. Carter did not place any weight on his left leg as he was lifted from the field and he hopped to the cart that took him to the locker room.

Carter has been one of the Patriots’ top defensive players this season. He has 52 tackles — 31 solo — and leads the Patriots with 10 sacks.

Carter did not return to the game. Coach Bill Belichick had no comment when asked about the severity of the injury in his postgame press conference.
