Report: Childress leaning toward sitting Favre
Brett Favre has started 291 consecutive games at quarterback dating back to the 1992 season, when he was a 23-year-old Green Bay Packer, his hair had no traces of gray, and no one had yet invented texting.
While Favre hasn’t practiced this week because of fractures in his ankle and foot, it was expected that he would make Consecutive Start No. 292 against the Patriots Sunday, extending his remarkable record of durability.
But Vikings coach Brad Childress may have other ideas.
The Minnesota Star-Tribune reported this morning that according to an NFL source, Childress is leaning toward starting Tavaris Jackson Sunday.
Further, the NFL Network reported that Favre himself is not sure Childress, who was highly critical of Favre’s performance after the Vikings’ loss to the Green Bay Packers last Sunday, will let him play.
If Favre sits, he will be replaced by fifth-year quarterback Tavaris Jackson, who has thrown 21 touchdown passes and 18 interceptions in 33 career games. Jackson’s career quarterback rating is 77.9; Favre’s rating this season is 68.0.
A clue about who will start at quarterback will likely be revealed at today’s practice. If Favre, who is no longer wearing a walking boot, can practice for the first time this week, it should enhance his chances of playing.
Then again, given the way he’s played this season, perhaps Childress is just looking for a reason to make a change.
