MSP excerpt: Brady and Belichick’s place in history

Tom Brady has often reminisced about his admiration for his boyhood hero, Joe Montana, the San Francisco 49ers’ four-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback who was at the peak of his Joe Cool powers while Brady was growing up in the Bay Area.
While it’s probably not accurate to apply the phrase “not in his wildest dreams” when it pertains to Brady — after all, the guy has won three Super Bowls and married the world’s most famous supermodel — there’s no doubt he appreciates his stature alongside Montana in the exclusive club of the NFL’s all-time finest quarterbacks.
The comparison between the Patriots and the dynastic Niners of the ’80s doesn’t end with the quarterbacks. It extends to the coaches as well, and let’s just say Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick have more in common than a first name and an affinity for Lombardi Trophies.
In an article excerpted with permission from the 2010 Maple Street Press Patriots Annual (edited by yours truly), multiple Associated Press Sports Editors awards honoree Dave D’Onofrio takes an in-depth look at where Brady and Belichick are in their careers while providing perspective on how they compare to Montana and Walsh, Pittsburgh’s Terry Bradshaw and Chuck Noll, and other quarterback/coach tandems who led their teams to multiple Super Bowl championships.
