Saints overwhelm Patriots
NEW ORLEANS — Like the sweet, sticky smell of incense and that hangs over the French Quarter at all hours of the day and night, the Patriots locker room seemed engulfed by a dewy haze as players tried to comprehend a 38-17 loss to the Saints.
“All of you saw it out there,” said Patriots defensive lineman Mike Wright. “The Saints do what they want to do, and they do it well. We just came up short tonight. Everyone in the locker room knows we can play better than we did out there.”
Said Vince Wilfork, “If we continue to play like that we’re going to have that losing feeling a lot more.”
This wasn’t as shocking as the last marquee game the Patriots played, a Sunday Night loss to the Indianapolis Colts. But it seemed more deflating. As Randy Moss finished up his interview in the press room, a somber Tom Brady slumped down into a chair beside a couple of cameras to wait his turn. He didn’t seem so much upset as he did defeated.
“We obviously didn’t play up to their level,” said Brady. “They played a great game, and we didn’t play so well. There’s a big gap between us.”
