Bruschi on Brady

Speaking on the Dale & Holley program on Boston sports radio station WEEI this afternoon, Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi wasn’t ready to concede that Tom Brady will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, but did say he expects Matt Cassel will be well-prepared to handle the job.

“Coach [Bill Belichick] said there are some tests that have to be done,” Bruschi said. “I’m not going [to think of Brady] being out until it’s black and white. If Matt’s gonna be our quarterback, we’ll back him.”

Bruschi said the Patriots emphasize to their younger players to be “ready when your number is called,” which should benefit Cassel.

“If Tom’s out, I’d be greatly disappointed,” Bruschi said. “I want him to be our quarterback for EVERY single game. But Tom would tell you this, if Randy Moss was out and replaced by the third or fourth or fifth receiver, he expects them to step in and do the job. It’s the same [situation] with Matt.”

Bruschi also dismissed the notion that the Chiefs’ Bernard Pollard tried to injure Brady on the fateful play.

“[As a defensive player] I fight and fight and fight. To make pressure, to alter a throw, and in my mind that was what he was doing,” Bruschi said. “Did he intentionally want to hurt Tom there? I don’t think so.”
