Morning sports update: Anthony Davis reportedly requests trade, wants move to ‘championship’ team
"Anthony wants to be traded to a team that allows him the chance to win consistently and compete for a championship."
Patriots players begin Super Bowl week with “Opening Night” on Monday. The Rams go first at 7 p.m., with the Patriots slated for 9 p.m.
The Celtics face Nets at home at 7:30 p.m., while the Bruins return to action on Tuesday against the Jets at 7 p.m.
Anthony Davis has reportedly requested a trade: The rumors have swirled for a long time regarding Pelicans center Anthony Davis and a possible trade to the Celtics. On Monday morning, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Davis’s agent, Rich Paul, has notified New Orleans that Davis has requested a trade.
Agent Rich Paul has notified the New Orleans Pelicans that All-NBA forward Anthony Davis has no intention of signing a contract extension if and when presented and that he has requested a trade, Paul told ESPN on Monday.

Davis can become a free agent in the summer of 2020. Wojnarowski followed up, noting that Paul has said Davis wants to be traded to a contender.

However, as Celtics fans know, Boston is essentially out of the Davis sweepstakes this season. The Celtics can’t have both Kyrie Irving and Davis on their roster under current circumstances as part of the “Rose Rule.”
Anthony Davis requesting a trade, as @wojespn has reported, gives teams other than Boston a chance to get involved before the trade deadline while Boston can’t because it already traded for Kyrie Irving while on a Rose rule deal. Celtics arguably can offer the best deal for him.

On this day: In 1971, the Patriots made the first pick in the NFL draft, selecting Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Jim Plunkett. The Stanford star would show flashes of talent, but never fully reach his potential in New England. However, he would fetch multple first round picks in 1976 when New England traded him to San Francisco, helping the Patriots become a contender in the late ’70s.
Later in his career, as a member of the Raiders, Plunkett would start (and win) two Super Bowls.
Also on this day, in 2009, a vintage display of “bend it like Beckham.”
